Long before her pursuit as a nurse, Sheri Tackett spent most of her time servicing others. She worked as a teacher’s assistant for people with disabilities at the Kilmer Center School in Vienna, Virginia; as a camp counselor at the Jaycees Cerebral Palsy Ranch in El Dorado, Kansas; and as a children’s advocate at The House of Ruth Shelter for Battered Women in Washington D.C.- a full decade before becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). After eight years as an LPN, Sheri became a Registered Nurse (RN) in 2000.
While working as an RN, Sheri loved to volunteer her time to various causes. From 2003 to 2005, she worked with the Peace Corps in Burkina Faso, West Africa, as a Health Extension Agent teaching classes on HIV/STDs, family planning, female excision, and basic prenatal care to village youth and assisting in the village clinic. She also assisted in the implementation of the National Polio Vaccination and the National Guinea Work Eradication campaigns. From 2006 to 2007, Sheri volunteered with Doctors Without Borders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a Field Nurse where she supervised a rural hospital in conjunction with a doctor, managed a therapeutic feeding center and a pharmacy warehouse for a rural hospital and three satellite clinics, and established a cholera treatment center during an outbreak.
From 2008 to 2010, Sheri attended Emory University Woodruff School of Nursing where she received her certification as a Certified Nurse Midwife and Family Nurse Practitioner. She completed a program in Global Complex Emergencies from the Center for Disease Control, Atlanta, Georgia and holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology from the University of Arizona.
In 2021, Sheri received the State Award for Excellence from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She is a member of the U.S. Embassy Casualty Response Team and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
Today, Sheri is Director of GRMC’s Cancer Care Center. She also works as a Nurse Practitioner in GRMC’s Oncology/Hematology Department. She has held positions at GRMC in Neonatal ICU, Pediatrics with newborns, Emergency Department, and in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department as a Certified Nurse Midwife. Since 2019, Sheri worked as a Medical Officer/Family Nurse Practitioner for the United States Peace Corps in Malawi, Africa.
