KUDOS TESTIMONIALS

On September 30, 2023, we rushed my husband to the GRMC hospital because his chest was hurting. When we arrived, he was immediately admitted to the emergency room and after being tested, we found out that he had a heart attack. The emergency doctor immediately called a cardiologist.

Just a few minutes later, the doctor came and immediately said that a stent procedure would be done on my husband. I cried a lot at that time because I was so worried about my husband’s condition, but Dr. ElBebawy comforted me saying that he will do his best to treat my husband. I am very thankful to God that there is an INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST available on Guam, and he is Dr. Bishoy ElBebawy. After the stent procedure, he shook my hand and said that the procedure he did was a success and that my husband is alive. My family and / are thankful to God that there is a wise and very kind interventional cardiologist here on Guam. We’re also grateful for all the nurses and all medical professionals at GRMC, especially those involved in caring for my husband: Althea Lomibao, Raven Agpaoa, and Cyrene Bansil. God bless you all!!! Praise God!

During a recent visit back home, I had to make 2 separate visits to the ER, with GRMC being closest in proximity. We’ve never been to their ER before but was pleasantly surprised at the quality of care given to both my husband and mother. We were all treated with respect and prompt care in a very clean environment. Kudos to the ER staff of GRMC. We all appreciate the dedication you give to the medical field.

“In May of 2024, I was diagnosed with stage 2 prostrate cancer. I had been getting regular annual checkups from Dr. Petero for years. During this checkup, the test results indicated a need for further testing. Based on Dr. Petero’s recommendation, I scheduled and had the tests completed. The end results indicated I had stage 2 prostrate cancer. A lot of things go through your mind when you receive this kind of information.

After further medical consultation with Dr. Petero, it was highly recommended that I pursue radiation treatment. Luckily, I did not have other underlying health issues. After researching what was available on Guam, and speaking with other acquaintances who had similar treatments, I got a referral to check with GRMC. I made an appointment and met with Dr. Hou. He explained everything in detail that was involved in the treatment process.

His professional manner and displayed concern really put me on ease.

had a lot of questions and he answered every one of them. I received a tour of the radiation room at which time I observed the model type of the equipment.”

“After the consultation session, I contacted the Houston Cancer Center and received two second opinions. The Houston Cancer Center uses the same model machine and does it the same way as GRMC. This put me at more ease.

Its always good to get second opinions, especially for something that can have a life-or-death impact. By this time, I was convinced that I was fortunate to get treated at a world class medical facility.”

A lot of additional tests are required prior to receiving radiation treatment.

MRIs, colonoscopy, blood work, etc. Would you believe, that with the referrals from Dr. Hou, I was able to get all these accomplished at GRMC.

One stop and shop. Imagine that. In addition, should other complications happen, stroke, etc., GRMC has the specialists on their staff and they can respond immediately.

If that’s not total reassurance of capability, then what is?”

“Living of Guam since 1978, I did not know we had that capability on island and all in one medical facility at that. Once all prerequisites were cleared, I was ready to start the treatments.

Every day during the treatments, I made sure I stayed active and got a good sweat. My community volunteer involvement with the Red Cross and veteran organizations continued as usual. My mind was set to stay positive, be active, eat right, not be ashamed of my condition and to openly talk about it. Having a positive outlook on life, feeling good about yourself, accepting what has happened, and finding time each day to smile and keeping your humor are important aspects that aid tremendously during the healing process.

Upon completion of my treatments,

GRMC’s Radiation Team provided me with a Certificate of Completion. It was more meaningful to me than graduating from college. Wow, this was awesome. I was able to hold back my tears.”

“I have never experienced this level of meaningful support before. The daily welcomes and smiles, the cheerful attitudes, the special attention to my needs and questions, and the daily encouragement. Had my situation not turned out for the better, I would have still accepted the results and still be delighted and content knowing that this wonderful GRMC team provided the very best support that one could expect.

Wouldn’t you agree that going to the hospital is one of the last places you’d like to be? For me, I didn’t have a choice but GRMC made sure it didn’t feel like it was.

I was admitted on June 27, 2024, for surgery and recovery. The days leading up to it were nerve-wracking! Then surgery day finally arrived, and I found myself at GRMC.

From the moment I walked in, I was warmly welcomed with a friendly security check, guided through admissions, and quickly taken to the Outpatient Surgery area. Upon arrival, I was again greeted warmly and taken to pre-op. I was amazed at how everyone made me feel so far—welcomed, calm, and reassured by their friendliness and professionalism.

As I headed to the OR, the nurse let me see my family one more time, allowing me to hug and kiss them. I was nervous, but the OR team of nurses and doctors were amazing. They prepped me and did their best to keep me calm. Zannah Togawa, RN, even prayed with me, which gave me such peace. The nurses were genuine and sincere. My anesthesiologist, John Walsh, was also fantastic-he introduced himself and, with his easygoing yet professional demeanor, assured me everything would be fine. My surgeon, Dr. Michael Cruz, visited briefly to check on me and reassured me as well.

When it was time for surgery, we rolled into the OR, and everything happened quickly. Before I knew it, I was waking up in recovery. Even as I was still groggy, a nurse was right there, closely monitoring me. Once I was fully awake and stable, I was taken to the recovery floor (the 4th floor), where the wonderful nurses and CNAs took excellent care of me.”

My ‘crib’ for the next two nights was welcoming. I had a wonderful view, and most importantly, the restroom was sparkling clean and well-sanitized.

My day nurse, Jill Gatdula, RN, was truly amazing, and I’m so grateful to have had her. Jill went above and beyond by assisting me and her kindness, gentleness, professionalism, and genuine care stood out. She never made me feel like I was a bother, even when I called for assistance multiple times. Every time I needed help, she went beyond her duties, and I really want to recognize her for that.

The other nurses, CNAs, dietary staff, and housekeeping were all fantastic.

Everyone was friendly, funny, and caring. I had Ryan Mandapat and PeeJay, and they made my stay so relaxing that recovery seemed easy. The staff’s endless encouragement to walk, eat, and rest made all the difference.

On my last day, I was visited by Deja Chanel Flores from Patient Experience.

She checked on my stay and ensured I was comfortable and treated well, which I most definitely was. As it came time for discharge, Jill provided me with my discharge documents, and I was on my way. From the heartfelt thank yous’ to the warm ‘see you out there, I left with a smile, knowing I received the best care imaginable.

I am thankful for the ICU and Telemetry ward” nurses for taking care of me post-surgery. GRMC” doctors, nurses, and administrative team were very professional, very polite, and they took very”
I experienced my first-ever heart attack on Oct. 12, 2024. This is my story.

My family was getting ready to attend a function at Leo Palace Resort scheduled for two o’clock pm. There was some time until the event so I decided to take a quick nap since it was still twelve o’clock that afternoon.

A few minutes into my nap, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my chest area. I was thinking it could be just the pressure from sleeping on my side, so I got up and went outside to walk around. The pain in my chest started to subside and eventually went away. That was at one o’clock pm. We arrived at the event around 1:45 pm, and went into the ballroom a little early. There were food vendors selling things to eat and drink, so I purchased a nacho cheese snack and a coke drink As we were sitting at our seats, the pain in my chest came back again. […] My chest kept on hurting but I figured it was just a cramp.

I started sweating vigorously, and the pain was getting worse by the minute. It went from my chest, then to my left armpit and shoulders. Both arms started to feel weak and sort of drooped down. […] This time I started to feel lightheaded to the point where I was wobbling as I walked back to my seat.

At that time, I informed my wife that my chest was still hurting and I probably needed to go to the clinic. I could feel my sweat glands on my face and more sweat on front of my shirt. We left the event right away, and my wife drove me to the FHP Clinic. Unfortunately, when we got there the urgent care said they could not treat me because I was presenting signs of having a heart attack and I should immediately go to the ER.

So, we started to head up to the GRMC ER. On the way, I was feeling nauseated and started aggressively coughing and vomiting. It became harder to breathe and felt like I was going to black out. I felt myself going in and out of consciousness, and felt like I was not going to make it. Eventually, we arrived at the GRMC emergency room.

The nurse quickly wheeled me into a room where a lot of nurses started working on me, putting wires on the front of my body. I was being asked a whole bunch of questions, but I could not remember my responses. Luckily, I had my wife by my side to help.

I recalled seeing a man hover over me telling me that I was having a major heart attack. Eventually, I figured out he was the attending cardiologist, Dr. Golla. […] Dr. Golla explained that he and his team were going to go through a series of tests and if they found something abnormal with my heart, they were going to treat it right away.

At this point, my eyes were mostly closed, and when I did open them everything seemed to be at very fast pace. I remembered feeling extreme pain in my left elbow area and screamed out. A person standing over behind my head said, ‘What is it?’ and I said the pain in my arm, and the person responded, ‘We are going through your arm to get to your heart.

From here, I realized that I must be in the operating room, so I decided to trust everyone around me. I was asked multiple times, ‘what was my pain – 10 being the worst,’ and ‘take a deep breath.’ I took the breaths and the pain level went from a seven, to a four, then to a two. Then I was told that the procedure was done.

I was really cold, but I could feel my chest relaxing, and the pain subsiding quickly from my back and armpits. I started to hear much better at this point, and even had a small conversation with a male nurse, as I thanked everyone one in the room for helping me. Then I was rolled to the ICU where I met Dr. Golla. He wanted my wife and my children present before he shared information about the operation. With my family present, Dr. Golla explained that he was successful in placing two stents in my main artery that he called the widow maker artery. One stent opened up a 100% blocked portion of the main artery and the other stent opened up another portion of the artery that was 70% blocked. Dr. Golla then explained that I arrived at the hospital just in time. If I waited just a little longer, I would not have made it through this fatal heart attack.
