(Tuesday, June 2, 2026; Dededo, Guam) – Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) is proud to announce that Dr. Gamaliel Jesse Ferrer, GRMC Family Medicine Hospitalist, has officially earned board-certified through the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM), making him Guam’s only board-certified obesity medicine specialist.
Dr. Ferrer earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from De La Salle Health Sciences Institute in the Philippines and completed his Family Medicine Residency through the University of Minnesota/CentraCare Saint Cloud Hospital. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to patient-centered care, academic excellence, and community service.
This milestone represents an important advancement in specialized healthcare services available locally, particularly as Guam continues to face growing rates of obesity and chronic conditions affecting the island community.
Dr. Ferrer has been part of the GRMC team since 2023 and brings years of clinical experience in family medicine, primary care, urgent care, and hospital medicine. His newly earned certification reflects advanced training and expertise in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of obesity and metabolic disease.
Obesity medicine is a growing medical specialty focused on evidence-based treatment approaches for obesity and associated chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, and metabolic disorders. Physicians certified in obesity medicine are specially trained in nutrition, physical activity, behavioral therapy, metabolic health, and medical management strategies designed to help patients achieve sustainable, long-term health improvements.
Dr. Ferrer’s certification further expands the level of specialized care available on Guam, allowing patients to access more comprehensive medical support for obesity and related chronic health conditions through individualized, evidence-based treatment approaches. As obesity continues to impact overall health and increase the risk of chronic disease, access to specialized obesity medicine care can play an important role in helping patients improve long-term health outcomes, lifestyle habits, and overall quality of life.
“Dr. Ferrer’s achievement is a tremendous milestone not only for GRMC, but for Guam’s healthcare community as a whole,” said Dr. Edison Manaloto, GRMC Chief Medical Officer. “Obesity continues to impact many individuals and families across our island, and having Guam’s only board-certified obesity medicine specialist
practicing locally expands access to comprehensive, evidence-based care for our patients and community.”
“Obesity is one of the most significant health challenges affecting our community and is closely connected to many chronic diseases we see every day,” said Dr. Ferrer. “My goal is to help patients improve their overall health and quality of life while providing our island community access to specialized obesity treatment here on
Guam.”
