Shriners to Perform Pediatric Surgeries at GRMC for First Time

(Monday, April 11, 2022; Dededo, Guam) Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) is proud to announce it will be the location of the first Pediatric Orthopedic clinic hosted by the Shriners Hospitals for Children – Honolulu in 2022, in conjunction with the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS). This is the third clinic to be held at GRMC.

During this visit, the Shriners Honolulu Medical Outreach Team will be performing pediatric surgeries at GRMC for the first time. The surgeries will be for select current patients only.

In addition to performing the select surgeries, Shriners Honolulu Medical Outreach Team will be treating children up to age 17 with orthopedic conditions, burns, and spinal cord injuries. The team will treat children who are both insured and uninsured by appointment only. The clinics will be held from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, on Thursday, April 21 and Friday, April 22 and again Monday through Friday, April 25 – 29.

Pediatric orthopedic surgeon Dr. Craig Ono will lead a team of six from Shriners Honolulu, which includes Vena Joco, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), Mike Nishimoto, APRN, Dianna Le, Certified Prosthetist Orthotist, Richard Nguyen, Pediatric Orthotics and Prosthetics Services Manager, and Sandy Zukeran and Eric Tsukamoto, Outreach Coordinators. The DPHSS will provide direct support under the leadership of Margarita Gay, RN, Administrator for the Bureau of Family Health and Nursing Services. The teams hope to exceed the number of children who were treated last year, which was over 500.

Parents or legal guardians of new patients, must complete an application form which may be picked up at 155 Hesler Place (former Guam Legislature building) in Hagåtña, Monday – Friday from 8:30 to 11:30 AM and 1:30 to 4:00 PM. Applications must include a copy of the child’s birth certificate, parent identification card, and proof of legal guardianship, if applicable.
