GRMC Strengthens Commitment to Patient Experience: Through Benita Jones’ Certified Chuukese Interpretation Services

(Wednesday, June 24, 2026; Dededo, Guam) – Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) is proud to recognize Benita Jones, Patient Experience Partner, for earning her certification as a Medical Interpreter for the Chuukese language.

This certification marks an important step in strengthening language access services and ensuring that Chuukese-speaking patients and families can better understand their health information and actively participate in decisions regarding their care. Effective communication is essential to a positive healthcare experience, and certified medical interpreters play a critical role in helping patients understand information related to their diagnosis, treatment plans, medications, procedures, and discharge instructions.

With Jones’ certification, certified Chuukese interpretation services are now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at GRMC. This expanded access helps reduce language barriers and ensures that patients and families have the information they need to make informed decisions about their healthcare.

“Every patient deserves the opportunity to understand what is happening with their care and to have a voice in decisions about their health,” said Tricia Chandler, Patient Experience Manager. “By strengthening our language access services, we are helping ensure that our Chuukese-speaking patients and families feel informed, supported, and included throughout their healthcare journey. We are very proud of Benita for her dedication and commitment to serving our community. This certification is just the beginning as we continue to expand and strengthen our language access services to better meet the needs of the diverse populations we serve.”

“Nita has been a loyal and dedicated member of the GRMC family since 2015,” said Cristal Vasquez, Director of Human Resources & Experience at Guam Regional Medical City. “Throughout her journey—from Communication Partner, to Unit Secretary in the Emergency Department, to her current role in Patient Experience—she has consistently demonstrated a commitment to serving our patients, families, and employees. She also played an important role in helping establish GRMC’s Human Experience Program, helping shape the culture of care and compassion that we continue to build today.”

Jones’ achievement reflects her dedication to helping patients feel heard, understood, and supported throughout their healthcare experience. Her accomplishment not only strengthens language access services today but also serves as an important foundation for future efforts to improve communication and ensure patients can fully understand and participate in their care.

As GRMC continues to advance patient-centered care, investments in language access services remain an important part of enhancing the patient experience and ensuring equitable care for the diverse communities it serves.
