GRMC Surgeon, Dr. J. Reinier F. Narvaez Inducted as Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) Among 2,122 Surgeons

(Wednesday, January 14, 2026; Dededo, Guam) – Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) proudly congratulates Dr. J. Reinier F. Narvaez, who was among 2,122 surgeons from around the world inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) during the October 4 Convocation that preceded the opening of the ACS Clinical Congress 2025 in Chicago, Illinois.
The American College of Surgeons Guam Chapter, established by Dr. Ricardo Eusebio, is now governed by GRMC surgeon, Dr. Christian Eusebio, who continues to advance the organization’s mission of promoting excellence and ethical standards in surgical care within the region.

The Clinical Congress, one of the largest educational meetings of surgeons in the world, is attended by thousands of surgeons and medical professionals every year. This year’s class of Initiates included 1,293 surgeons from the U.S. and Canada; 829 are from 91 other countries around the world.

Dr. Narvaez received his medical doctorate from the University of California, San Francisco and currently practices at GRMC. He is board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. Dr. Narvaez has a strong professional interest in trauma and emergency surgery and holds membership in other professional societies, including the Eastern Society for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST).

By meeting the College’s stringent membership requirements, Fellows of the American College of Surgeons have earned the distinguished right to use the designation “FACS” (Fellow, American College of Surgeons) after their names. An applicant for Fellowship must be a graduate of an approved medical school; must have completed advanced training in one of the 14 surgical specialties recognized by the College; must possess certification by an American surgical specialty board or appropriate certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; and must have been in practice for at least one year at the time of his or her application. Before admission into Fellowship, the surgeon must further demonstrate ethical and professional proficiency, and his or her acceptance as a Fellow of the College must be approved by three-fourths of its Board of Regents.

In addition to the Convocation, the Clinical Congress also featured reports on research-in-progress, panel discussions, guest lectures, poster sessions, and technical exhibits. More than 11,000 people participated in Clinical Congress 2025, including approximately 10,444 in-person in Chicago and 935 virtual attendees.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient. The College is dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery. Its achievements have established it as an important advocate for all surgical patients. The College has approximately 90,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.

“Dr. Narvaez’s induction into the American College of Surgeons is a proud moment for our hospital and for Guam,” said Dr. Alexander “Beau” Wielaard, GRMC CEO. “He exemplifies the highest standards of surgical excellence through his clinical skill, compassion for patients, and commitment to continuous professional development. Dr. Narvaez plays a vital role in advancing trauma and emergency surgical care at GRMC, ensuring that our patients receive world-class treatment here at home.”

GRMC celebrates Dr. Narvaez’s achievement as a reflection of the hospital’s commitment to excellence in patient care and the continuous pursuit of professional growth among its medical staff. His induction into the American College of Surgeons underscores GRMC’s dedication to providing Guam and the Marianas with world-class surgical expertise.
