GRMC ABI/PVR Tests

GRMC Offers Quick, Simple Tests to Detect Poor Blood Flow and Health Risks for Eligible Patients

(Friday, December 20, 2024; Dededo, Guam) — Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) is now offering

Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) and Pulse Volume Recording (PVR) testing to help patients assess blood flows in their arms and legs. These tests are crucial in detecting Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), a condition that affects the blood vessels in the heart and brain, often caused by blocked arteries. Early detection of PVD leads to effective treatments and can prevent severe complications, such as a heart attack, stroke, or an amputation.

Both ABI and PVR tests are non-invasive, quick, and painless. The ABI test measures blood flow in the legs by comparing blood pressure in the ankle to the arm. Meanwhile, the PVR test measures blood flow by recording changes in blood volume as blood moves through the arms and legs. These tests can uncover problems that may be missed by other methods, particularly those affecting mobility and day-to-day activities.

Together, these tests provide a comprehensive assessment of vascular health, helping providers better understand the extent of any circulation issues for patients. This combination improves diagnostic accuracy, informs treatment decisions, and allows for ongoing monitoring of a patient’s condition.

Once the test results are available, a personalized treatment plan will be recommended. This may include lifestyle changes, medications, or even surgical procedures. For patients already managing a vascular condition, the ABI and PVR tests offer valuable insight to track the effectiveness of ongoing treatments and make adjustments as necessary.

These tests are particularly important for individuals over the age of 50 and have experienced one or more of the following:

  • A history of smoking
  • Foot ulcers or leg pain/cramping during physical activities
  • A history of heart disease or diabetes

If you fall into any of these categories, consider scheduling a Cardiovascular ABI and PVR test. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact GRMC Referral Management at 671-633-4762 or email refer@grmc.gu.
