A Milestone in Healthcare Excellence: GRMC Achieves TJC Recertification as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center

(Tuesday, November 26, 2024; Dededo, Guam) – Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) is proud to announce its recertification by The Joint Commission (TJC) as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. This significant achievement followed an intensive 2-day survey, focusing on all areas of the hospital including: provision of care, medication management, outcome statistics, patient rights and responsibilities, performance improvement, stroke prevention, emergency management and target goal times, environment of care, human resources, rehabilitation, and leadership. This accomplishment further solidifies GRMC’s commitment to delivering the highest quality of stroke care for the residents of Guam and the Micronesian Region.

The recertification as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center recognizes GRMC’s comprehensive approach to stroke care, emphasizing the importance of timely and effective treatment. Jennifer Artero, RN, Stroke Coordinator quotes, “The ability for GRMC to treat stroke clients involves multiple different aspects, elements, and circumstances that must come together seamlessly to prevent and/or minimize disability and death.  Our Stroke Center is designed to provide these unique and critical elements necessary to achieve long-term success and improved outcomes for the stroke patient.”

GRMC’s Stroke Program is built on a foundation of collaboration among various departments, ensuring that patients receive coordinated and efficient care. Elisabeth Collins, Stroke Program Manager, expressed her enthusiasm about the recertification, stating, “We are thrilled to receive recertification as an Advanced Primary Stroke by The Joint Commission. As GRMC’s Stroke Program continues to expand, our commitment to providing high-quality stroke care and improving stroke outcomes remains the same. Thank you to all of the departments involved in stroke care at GRMC and to our patients and their families for entrusting us with your care!”

This recertification not only highlights GRMC’s commitment to excellence in stroke care but also reinforces its role as a critical healthcare provider in the region. With a dedicated team of specialists and advanced protocols in place, GRMC is equipped to handle stroke emergencies effectively, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for patients and their families.

This recertification provides reassurance that GRMC’s patients are receiving care at a facility with specialized resources and expertise in place to handle the complexities of stroke treatment. With a focus on providing swift interventions and supporting patients through the recovery process, GRMC is committed to enhancing the lives of those affected by stroke.

GRMC encourages the public to learn the signs and symptoms of stroke by remembering the acronym “B.E.F.A.S.T.” This simple guide recognizes a stroke in its early stages: B = Balance loss; E = Eyes (sudden vision changes); F = Face drooping; A = Arm weakness; S = Speech difficulty; T-Time to call 911!

Identifying these warning signs quickly can make all the difference in minimizing long-term damage. Remember, #TIMEISBRAIN—every moment counts when it comes to stroke treatment.
