GRMC hosts employee training in recognition of Patient Safety Awareness Week

(Tuesday, March 14, 2023; Dededo, Guam) Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) is conducting its annual, hospital-wide Patient Safety Awareness Week (PSAW) training for employees from Tuesday, March 14th thru Friday, March 17th. PSAW is a national, annual recognition week created to promote education on healthcare safety. Each year, GRMC’s Quality Management and Patient Safety teams collaborate with various clinical and non-clinical departments within GRMC to provide education on current policies and procedures pertinent to patient safety.

Healthcare safety topics that will be featured include HIPAA (Health Information Management), fall prevention, suicide prevention, medication error prevention (Nursing), food safety (Clinical Dietary), Code Gray/de-escalation (Life Safety & Security), harassment (Human Resources), decontamination response team (Emergency Management), hand hygiene (Infection Control), prevention of needle stick injury (Employee Health), and much more. Specialists from multiple departments will be situated in booths in various parts of the hospital throughout the week, allowing employees to fulfill their trainings in each specialty.

GRMC Quality and Patient Safety Specialist Michael Khan shares, “GRMC is proactively preventing harm from occurring.” He explains that the hospital has been consistent in this annual training since opening in 2015 to foster collaborative growth in the quality of GRMC’s patient care. Khan also emphasizes the importance for employees to continuously be educated and refreshed on patient safety practices and policies. He says, “This annual training empowers everyone to better equip ourselves with information about the best practices and hospital policies and procedures to safely and efficiently conduct our duties.”

GRMC President and CEO Alan Funtanilla says, “During this Patient Safety Awareness Week, GRMC recommits to promoting a safety culture that engages our staff through safety education and training. This is an integral effort towards our commitment to providing exceptional care for our patients, just as we would for our own family.”

Trainings will occur throughout GRMC at the Lower Lobby, Lobby, 4^th, and 5^th floors as follows:

• Tuesday, March 14^th, 9am – 12pm
• Wednesday, March 15^th, 9am – 12pm
• Thursday, March 16^th, 5pm – 8pm
• Friday, March 17^th, 6pm – 9pm
