GRMC Passes Follow-up Survey Inspection by CMS

(Tuesday, February 5, 2019; Dededo, Guam) Guam Regional Medical City received passing marks from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) following a recent follow-up inspection at the hospital. The CMS paid an unannounced visit to GRMC last week on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 to conduct the follow-up survey.

Upon completion of a thorough inspection, GRMC was informed on Friday that it had passed the follow up survey and is in full compliance with The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA). EMTALA is a federal law that requires emergency departments to stabilize and treat all patients, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay for treatment.

“We are very pleased that GRMC has passed the CMS’ follow-up survey inspection,” said Emergency Department Nurse Manager Sarah Betcher, “It’s a testament to the hard work our staff puts in to keeping GRMC a hospital that can be trusted to provide the best care for Guam.”

GRMC’s success with the CMS survey inspection last week is another in a series for the hospital. In November 2018, GRMC was re-accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC) for another three years following a three-day inspection. Later that same month, GRMC’s laboratory received accreditation from the prestigious Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), which the US federal government recognizes as being equal-to or more-stringent-than their own inspection program.

“Passing CMS inspections and receiving TJC and CAP accreditations with no conditional findings are achievements we value. However, they are never the end goal for GRMC. In fact, we treat these surveys as catalysts for finding new opportunities for improvement,” said Chief Medical Officer Felix T. Cabrera, “Our patients count on us to continually make strides to improve the quality of the healthcare we deliver.”

CEO and president Michael Cruz, M.D. concurred, adding “Achieving these important accreditations and passing inspections is critical to maintaining the public’s trust in GRMC. I am very proud of our team for their professional response to an unexpected visit by the CMS and for coming through with flying colors to ensure GRMC will continue providing excellent healthcare for Guam.”
