GRMC to Make Departmental Changes

(Thursday, October 4, 2018) Guam Regional Medical City announces its intention of suspending its Maternal Child Health (MCH) services indefinitely. The date for full closure has been not been confirmed but is anticipated to take place before the end of the year. The units affected by the closure will include Labor, Delivery and Recovery (LDR), Neonatal Intensive Care, Pediatric Intensive Care and Pediatrics.

Currently, Maternal Child Health services are duplicated at both hospitals. “The region’s health challenges are too great, with too limited resources to be operating redundant services that can potentially be consolidated,” says Dr. Mike Cruz, President and COO. “This is not a novel idea. Many of Guam’s civic and healthcare leaders have recommended GMH become the center of excellence for Maternal Child Health and it has not fallen on deaf ears. In fact, Dr. Cabrera and I have already met with our counterparts at GMH for preliminary discussions. GRMC and GMH will further solidify our partnership through the efforts needed for the transition and consolidation of these services.”

Effective the official closure date, GRMC will better focus on specialized care, where the hospital excels.

“GRMC’s primary goals have not changed, which are to be a center of excellence for cardiopulmonary, neuroscience and oncology services in the region,” said Dr. Felix T. Cabrera, Chief Medical Officer. “However, for us to continue providing sustainable and high value specialized care, we have come to a critical juncture where we must refocus our limited resources. In our self-assessment, we have recognized what we can do well. We have also been honest in our assessment that our community is likely better served by consolidating Maternal Child Health back to our GMH partners.”
