Exploring Healthcare: A 3-Day Hospital Immersive Experience

Course Description

This 3-day immersive experience offers individuals a unique opportunity to explore the dynamic environment of a hospital. Participants will gain insights into various healthcare professions, understand the daily operations of a hospital, and learn about patient care and hospital management. The immersive experience aims to inspire students to consider careers in healthcare by providing hands-on experiences and interactions with medical professionals.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this immersive experience, students will be able to:

  • Understand the basic functions and roles within a hospital setting.
  • Identify different healthcare careers and the education required for each.
  • Gain a foundational knowledge of patient care.
  • Recognize the importance of teamwork and communication in healthcare.

Infection Prevention, Lab, Pharmacy and Radiology start this day. Followed by Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Respiratory Therapy and Social Work

 

Nursing and beyond – Careers in Healthcare
(Day 3)

Exploring various Nursing and Nurse Practitioner educational pathways, personal experiences from professionals.

Day 1: Introduction to Hospital Life

Key Concepts:

  • Overview of hospital departments: emergency, surgery, inpatient units, etc. with a walking tour
  • Basics behind preventing and managing infection.
  • CPR certification class

Day 2: Patient Care Through the Eyes of the Therapy Departments

Key Concepts:

  • Basics of patient care: Respiratory Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy

Day 3: Nursing Careers in Healthcare

Key Concepts:

  • Exploring a variety of nursing specialties: from informatics through intensive care.
  • Educational and training pathways for nursing specialties.
  • Personal stories and experiences from nurses.

This immersive experience concludes with reflections on the modern healthcare system and its continuous evolution, encouraging students to consider their potential roles in shaping the future of healthcare.

SHInE (SUMMER HOSPITAL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE) M.D.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: JUNE 17, 2025
MINIMUM 16 YEARS OF AGE

PROGRAM START DATE: JULY 7 – AUGUST 1, 2025
This 4-week M.D. internship experience allows individuals to explore the different primary care and specialties of medicine. Individuals will have the opportunity to engage with medical providers from the hospital’s Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Critical Care, and Specialty Services. Through the SHInE M.D. Program Individuals will have a great understanding on the process in becoming a Medical Provider.

PURPOSE:
Internships are defined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) as: “a form of experiential learning that intergrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.

The Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) Summer Hospital Internship Experience (SHInE) Program’s purpose is to emulate the internship experience by providing the individual a snapshot of what it is like to work in a hospital as a physician, a nurse, a physical therapist, a respiratory therapist, a laboratory technologist, a pharmacist and other clinical/hospital positions.

ELIGIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS

INDIVIDUALS MUST:
• Complete SHInE Application form. Note to pay special attention to the essay section.
• Submit application to GRMC or HR Department via email at learning@grmc.gu.
• Available to participate in a minimum of 85% of sessions.
• Attend GRMC Orientation.
• Follow Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures.
• Submit record of Tuberculosis (TB) test and chest x-ray if a positive reactor before beginning the
program. Provide proof of receiving the COVID-19 vaccination.
• SHInE M.D. is limited to 10 participants.

DRESS CODE:
Individuals must be in business professional clothing and in concert with the GRMC dress code policy. department managers will provide guidance on what individual can wear. Individuals are always required to wear the GRMC-issued badge while attending the Program.

EVALUATION:
Individuals must complete an evaluation form at the end of the Program. GRMC will provide a certificate of completion and if applicable credits to respective school.
