
Dr. Joseph Jo-Yee Poon is an internal medicine physician with experience in hospitalist medicine, post-acute care leadership, and medical education. He is now part of GRMC, where he provides patient-centered, evidence-based care to the island community.

Dr. Joseph Jo-Yee Poon is a dedicated internal medicine physician whose career spans hospitalist medicine, post-acute care, clinical research, and medical education. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Sydney Medical School in Australia and holds a Bachelor of Science in Honors Biomedical Sciences from the University of Waterloo in Canada. He went on to complete his residency in Internal Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West in New York City, where he pursued the Medical Education Track with a focus on leadership, scholarship, and teaching.
During residency, Dr. Poon gained extensive experience managing complex tertiary care patients at institutions including Mount Sinai Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He also contributed to academic medicine through published research in sleep medicine and COVID-19 outcomes and earned recognition such as the Sydney Medical School Summer Research Scholarship and the Sir John Loewenthal Prize for top performance in surgery.
Dr. Poon went on to serve as a hospitalist with Pioneer Medical Group in central Florida, providing high-quality care in a dynamic hospital system. He later became Medical Director of Post-Acute Care, leading teams of nurse practitioners across multiple rehabilitation and long-term care facilities. In this role, he spearheaded quality initiatives, worked to reduce hospital readmissions, and collaborated closely with case management teams. He also served as a voting member of the Medical Staff Quality Committee and the Utilization Management Committee, ensuring standards of excellence in care delivery.
Now at GRMC, Dr. Poon continues his commitment to delivering compassionate, evidence-based internal medicine care. His blend of clinical expertise, leadership in healthcare quality, and dedication to education make him a valuable addition to GRMC’s growing team of physicians and a trusted resource for the island community.
Outside of his professional duties, Dr. Poons enjoys playing tennis, swimming, traveling, watching movies, spending time with family and friends.
