GRMC Invites the Island to FREE Community Event: Heart Strong: Learn the Facts About Heart Attacks

(Monday, February 24, 2025; Dededo, Guam) — Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) is inviting the community to attend a FREE outreach event, Heart Strong: Learn the Facts About Heart Attacks, on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the Micronesia Mall Center Court from 10 AM to 2 PM. This event aims to educate the public on heart health, including prevention and treatment of heart disease. Whether you’re seeking to improve your heart health or simply want to understand more about heart attacks, this event is open to all.

10:30 AM to 11:15 AM: PRESENTATION & Q&A

The presentation will be held from 10:30 AM to 11:15 AM and will be led by GRMC’s Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. Mahesh Golla, where he’ll provide essential information about heart disease, risk factors, and signs of heart attacks. A Q&A session will also follow the presentation, giving attendees

the chance to receive personalized advice.

Dr. Bishoy ElBebawy and Dr. Robert Palusinski, GRMC’s Cardiologists will also be available at GRMC’s Cardiology booth for those who would like to ask additional questions or speak with them directly.

12 PM to 2 PM: FREE EKG TESTING

For those looking for a more detailed heart health check, FREE EKG testing will be offered to the first 25 people who sign up. This testing will take place from 12 PM to 2 PM after the main presentation. For those interested in taking an EKG test, here’s what you need to know:

  • It takes 5-10 minutes to complete
  • Participants must be 18 years or older
  • Wear comfortable clothing (e.g., button-up shirt)
  • Must not have had an EKG in the past year

What Does EKG Testing Mean for Me?

An EKG (electrocardiogram) is a simple, painless, non-invasive test that measures the electrical activity of your heart. Every time your heart beats, electrical signals travel through it, causing the heart to contract and pump blood. The EKG records these electrical signals to help doctors understand how well your heart is functioning.

The test is important because it can reveal a variety of heart issues that might not show obvious symptoms. An EKG can detect irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), previous heart attacks, or other heart conditions. It’s also a useful tool for spotting potential heart problems early, which can help prevent more serious issues down the road.

An EKG can help you stay proactive about your heart health. If you’re at risk for heart disease or have a family history of heart problems, an EKG is a great way to monitor your heart and catch potential issues early.

Participants will also have access to FREE health screenings, including blood pressure checks, and can visit vendor booths from GRMC and partners. Additionally, exciting raffle prizes will also be available for attendees. GRMC encourages everyone to attend and take advantage of this valuable educational opportunity. Whether you’re concerned about heart disease or simply want to learn how to protect your heart, this event is a great step toward better health and stay #HeartStrong.

“We’re excited to offer this opportunity for the community to learn more about heart health,” says Dr. Golla. “Our goal is to equip everyone with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions about their heart health.”
